Naturally occurring Rudraksha tree is a large, evergreen broad-leaved tree found in Tropical and Sub-Tropical areas at altitudes ranging from sea level to 2000 meters above the sea level. Biologically, Rudraksha belongs to the Elaeocarpaceae family. The leaves of Rudraksha tree are shining green on the upper side with a dull leathery dorsal side. Rudraksha flowers are white with fringed petals. Rudraksha fruit appears in the month of June and ripens by August-October.
Though Rudraksha trees are mainly found in Nepal, India and Indonesia, in the late nineteenth centuries, the most popular variety of these trees found in Nepal, matched the broad specifications given in ancient Indian epics, the Vedic Puranas. In more recent time the popularity of these beads has increased manifold.
